Richard Dadd 영국 빅토리아 시대의 화가

 

26세 되던 해인 1844년 그는 아버지를 살해한다. 그건 아버지의 모습을 한 악마라고 믿었기 때문이다.

그 후 그는 43년간 Bethlem Hospital 과  Broadmoor 정신병원에 감금된 채 생애를 보낸다.

 

거기서 그는 계속해서 그림을 그리게 되는데, 그때 1855- 1864년 9년에 걸쳐 그가 그린 그림 중 하나가 현재 테이트 미술관에

소장되어 있는 아래 그림 The Fairy Feller"s Master Stroke이다. 그림 한가운데 - 아래 그림에서 32번 - 에 도끼를 들고 그 앞에 놓인

도토리(32)를 패려는 이가 이 그림 제목이 암시하는 주인공인 셈이다. 그의 위쪽에 서 있는 군주 (14)는 광대들이 쓰는 모자를 쓰고 있고,

그의 주위를 희귀한 요정들이 둘러싸고 있다. 그는 도끼를 들고있는 자에게 명령을 내리는 위치에 있다.

세익스피어를 좋아했던 Dadd는 '로미오와 쥴리엣'에 등장하는 여왕 Mab (13)의 일화를 그림 속에 집어 넣고 있다고 한다.   

 

She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate stone
On the forefinger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomies
Athwart men's noses as they lie asleep:
Her wagon spokes made of long spinners' legs,
The cover, of the wings of grasshoppers;
Her traces, of the smallest spider's web;
Her collars, of the moonshine's watery beams;
Her whip, of cricket's bone; the lash, of film;
Her wagoner, a small gray-coated gnat,
Not half so big as a round little worm
Prick'd from the lazy finger of a maid;
Her chariot is an empty hazelnut,
Made by the joiner squirrel or old grub,
Time out o' mind the fairies' coachmakers.
And in this state she gallops night by night

Richard Dadd가 그린 또 한점의 유명한 그림은  Sketch of an Idea for Crazy Jane (1855) 이다.

 

 

 

순정만화 표지 쯤에 등장할 분위기의, 수채화로 그려진 이 그림은 헤어진 연인 때문에 광인이 된 Jane의 모습이라고 하는데, 누가 보더라도 모델이 되었던 자가 남자라는 것을 알 수 있다. 아마도 Dadd는 정신병원에서 여자 모델을 구하기 힘들었을 것이다.
